Cobourg, ON – August 16, 2023 – Today at County Council, the Township of Alnwick Haldimand and Township of Cramahe took home the trophies for this year’s Mayors’ ‘Keep the County Clean’ Challenge. This annual week-long litter clean-up challenge took place earlier this year, during Earth Week in April.
The Township of Alnwick/Haldimand took home the title of ‘Highest Proportional Representation of Volunteers’ with 5.9 per cent of the population participating in this year’s challenge, followed by the Town of Cobourg as first runner up. The Township of Cramahe took home the title of ‘Hardest Working Volunteers’ with a remarkable average of 25.7 kg of waste collected per volunteer.
“Thank you to all the dedicated volunteers who participated in this year’s litter clean-up challenge,” states County Warden Mandy Martin. “We commend you all for generously donating your time and efforts to ensure our community spaces are clean and litter-free. Congratulations to the residents of the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand and the Township of Cramahe for their remarkable contributions to help keep the County clean.”
From April 17 to 22, over 2,434 Northumberland County residents collected 19,020 kilograms of litter and illegal dumping. This year’s competition saw the 4th highest year on record for volunteer participation and litter collected, since the initiative started in 2008. The ’Keep the County Clean’ Challenge continues to support a clean environment in Northumberland and demonstrates exemplary community spirit.
