We live in one of the most scenic areas in Ontario, but our rural landscape has also made access to reliable high-speed internet a long-standing challenge. That’s now changing.

A transformative broadband expansion project is underway, designed with the entire County in mind. With support from all levels of government and private investment this project is now under construction to deliver fast, reliable internet access to 11,000 homes and businesses across Northumberland.

This project will help close the digital divide for roughly 95 per cent of currently underserved or unserved properties — unlocking opportunities for online education, remote work, smart farming, healthcare access, business innovation, and more.

While this is a significant step forward, we recognize that some locations in very remote areas remain unserved. We’re actively exploring opportunities and advocating for additional investment to expand the network further — so that every household and business in Northumberland has the opportunity to connect.

High-speed internet is taking root

What high-speed connectivity means for residents

Reliable high-speed internet opens the door to new opportunities and improved quality of life for Northumberland County residents. It enables access to education and remote learning, supports rural businesses with dependable online tools, and powers smart agriculture solutions that boost productivity. It enhances access to healthcare through telemedicine, increases opportunities for self-employment and remote work, and provides seamless access to streaming entertainment. Most importantly, it helps ensure that people living in rural communities can stay connected, competitive, and supported in their everyday lives.

Building the network: What to expect

This broadband network will be built using fibre-optic technology, ensuring fast, reliable, and future-proof connectivity for seamless streaming, remote work, and online healthcare and learning.

Introducing Axle Telecom

Axle Telecom Logo

Axle Telecom will build the broadband network and provide internet services to residents and businesses. They are your main contact for the Northumberland Broadband Project. You can contact Axle Telecom at 1-844-702-2848 or visit AxleTelecom.ca

Axle Telecom is a Canadian-owned telecommunications company dedicated to connecting small, underserved, rural communities. They are new to this area, but have extensive experience in providing fast, stable internet to rural and underserved communities in Ontario, and are one of seven approved providers by the province.

How Axle is bringing high-speed internet to Northumberland

  • 1,125 km of fibre-optic cable will be installed throughout Northumberland
  • The network will provide direct fibre access to over 11,000 homes and businesses
  • There will be no cost to run a connection from the network backbone up to your home/business thanks to this government-private sector partnership

How to get connected

Stay tuned to be part of this high-speed network. Watch for flyers and upcoming information sessions.

The process of bringing high-speed internet to your home or business will happen in three phases.

Phase 1 – No action required

Axle Telecom will begin construction of the main network within existing municipal road allowances. Residents may see construction crews marking sites with flags, digging, and laying fibre cables.

Fibre-optic cable will be buried underground where possible, and aerial utility poles will only be used when necessary. Advanced techniques such as directional drilling and plowing will be used to reduce the impact on the landscape, and any affected areas will be restored upon project completion.

Phase 2 – Consent to connect

Construction is underway - here's how you can prepare. To enable high-speed internet access to your home or business, residents must provide Axle Telecom with consent to install fibre from the roadside network up to your home/business.

  • Axle Telecom will deliver a consent form to residents and business owners.
  • Signing the form does not commit residents to purchasing internet service. It simply allows crews to install the necessary infrastructure — at no cost â€” so residents can sign up for high-speed internet in the future, if they wish.
  • We highly recommend signing the form, even if residents don’t plan to subscribe to internet service right away. Having the connection in place will future-proof homes or businesses should they wish to activate service later.

Phase 3 – Sign up for internet service

Once the network is built and tested in your area, and fibre is installed to your home, Axle Telecom will notify you about available internet plans and pricing. At that time, you can choose the service that best fits your needs and enjoy:

  • Ultra-fast speeds (up to 1 gbps)
  • Stable, reliable connections
  • Competitive pricing options

Stay connected. Stay informed.

Northumberland County is committed to keeping residents updated on project progress and installation timelines to ensure all eligible households and business have the opportunity to take advantage of connecting to the Northumberland broadband network.

Check back regularly for updates on when crews will be available in your area.
